ABOUT JOANNA
Hey there,
I’m Joanna.
I help adults understand their lives through life story writing and life review.
For years, I held onto stories about my
past that weighed me down.
Reframing those narratives was not only freeing, it helped me feel more alive in the present and grateful for the wisdom my experiences carried.
My journey to better understand my life started during a major life transition
Ten years ago, my life fell apart.
My marriage was ending. Around the same time, I lost both my mother and my sister. I felt empty. Adrift. Alone.
I’d left a successful career to focus on being a mother and to support my husband’s business. Now I was an empty nester — on my own, struggling to imagine what came next. Who was I now? Where was I heading? Then I found a book with one simple question: How has your life been a good teacher and friend?
I found a spiral notebook and started writing. Memories. Heartbreaks. Triumphs. Each time I wrote, I discovered something new — about myself, about the people in my life, about the chapters I’d been trying to put behind me. I began to see hidden strengths. I realized that many of my most difficult experiences had been preparing me for something I couldn’t yet see.
My sense of purpose reignited. And I felt called to guide others through this same process — to help them stop replaying regrets and start seeing what their lives have actually been teaching them.
In an Authority Magazine interview, I shared how reinventing myself in my second chapter led me to found Journey to Legacy.
I now know this: changing how you see your past changes everything about your future.
Our most difficult chapters often contain our greatest gifts.
It’s never too late to rewrite the stories we believe about ourselves.
That’s why I do this work.
Professional Background
Joanna Klein brings together decades of experience as a social worker, a background in academia, and her own deeply personal work in life review. As the founder of a life story writing platform, she created a space for thoughtful, guided storytelling. She also helps others navigate modern tools like AI—showing them how to use them to enhance, not replace, their writing and self-reflection.
With a BA in Sociology and a Master’s in Social Work, she has guided people through life’s transitions as a counselor, instructor, and college dean at Allan Hancock College – working across halfway houses, college campuses, Fortune 500 companies, and nonprofit leadership. Along the way, she pioneered employee assistance programs and led women’s support circles rooted in reflection and growth. She is known for her deep listening and her ability to help people recognize patterns, gently reframe limiting beliefs, and move forward with greater clarity and purpose.
Joanna brings not only decades of professional experience but the perspective that comes from having done this work in her own life—looking back with honesty, compassion, and curiosity. Through Journey to Legacy, she brings this wisdom into a compassionate, structured approach to reflection and storytelling.
In 2021, in response to the needs of her students, Joanna envisioned and oversaw the development of the Life Story Studio writing platform and created all of her course content herself—from teaching to filming and editing—so the experience feels personal, consistent, and true to her approach. She is a trusted resource in her community for navigating AI tools, helping others feel more confident using them in thoughtful and meaningful ways. When she teaches about using AI in life story writing, she speaks from experience—not theory.
Her programs blend insights from psychology, self-compassion, and storytelling with practical writing guidance, creating a safe and supportive space where people can explore their experiences, make sense of their lives, and discover the deeper meaning within their stories.
If you’re here, it may be because something in you is ready to understand your life more deeply, to see your experiences with fresh eyes, and to tell your story in a way that feels true.
