I’m Joanna Klein, life story writing coach and founder of Journey to Legacy.
I didn’t come to this work from a writing background. I came to it from loss.
My sister Laurie had the most extraordinary memory of anyone I’ve ever known. She could retell a moment from our childhood with such vivid detail that you felt like you were living it again. But Laurie never wrote her stories down. When she died suddenly from cancer in 2015, those stories went with her. Her grandchildren will never hear her version of their family history. That gap is permanent — and it changed everything for me.
For over 40 years I’ve worked as a counselor, educator, and facilitator with a master’s degree in social work — helping people understand themselves and their lives more deeply. Life story writing sits at the intersection of all of it. It’s not just about capturing what happened. It’s about understanding what it meant.
